When Zeus had defeated his Father and freed his siblings they had to decide who ruled what. They drew straws and Zeus had first pick. He claimed the sky. He could look down upon everything and the heavens were anywhere. I had always admired the sky, expecially at night. Greek mythology had been one of my interests as a youngster as well. But my idol was Athena; the Goddess of War- the daughter of Zeus and Metis. I couldn't help but be drawn to Poseidon either. Being the God of the Sea, I just had to like him. I had let my mind drift off into the confusing family tree of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. My emerald eyes mindlessly watched the waves in their repetitive cadence; withdraw, build-up, then crash on the shore.
I strolled up near the palm trees, keeping on the footpath. I had always loved the breath-taking sunsets on the beach. As I came to an empty bench I decided to sit and watch the sun slowly descend behind the horizon.I sat on the backrest with my feet in the seat, my elbows leaning on my knees. My chin rested in my hand, my eyes glued to the sky as the colors slowly darkened. Soon they would be light purple. Only about ten more minutes before the sun would disappear.

The muffled, rhythmic thump-thump of hooves into the sand mingled with the hiss and murmur of the waves sliding up onto the beach. Hero trotted easily over the beach, his head swaying in time to his stride, while his rider let his gaze drift sea-ward. He'd never seen the ocean this close up before and it was utterly fascinating. It couldn't compare with the mountains and valleys of Montana, of course, but it was close.
An old tune by Waylon Jennings formed in his throat, tickling until he began humming it. It wasn't very long before he was singing, in his usual off-key baritone. At least there weren't any other people on the beach, aside from himself. He'd never contemplate exercising his untalented voice if he knew there were other folks around. Hero never complained, except to twitch an ear. A better secret-keeper had never been born, if it wasn't a horse.

My emerald eyes mindlessly gazed out at the sky. WHen I was little I dreamed of being able to fly. I wanted to lay in the clouds and watch everyone below me. But reality kicked in and I realized it would never happen. . .until I started jumping. When I was about 6, my Father began teaching me so that I could show even more of his horses. He said I had inherited this gene from him since it seemed to come naturally to me. He said I was one with the horse as we soared through the courses. I couldn't help but smile as one of my fondest memories replayed in my mind. I had been showing a warmblood cross when I was about 7 and in one of my classes I had had an older male competitor. After the class was over and I had been given the blue ribbon he approached me and looked at me in awe. 'You look like an ant on an elephant. But you've got talent little lady. Congradulations.' SInce it had been just a local show, they combined all jumping classes; yet there had still been only two competitors.
I was drawn back to the current moment as I seen movement to my left. Focusing on the figure, I found it to be a man and his horse. My rosy lips curved in a smile. I couldn't wait to start riding regulary for Lexi. I remained seated as they approached, expecting them to just pass on by. I fixed my eyes back on the darkening sky. The North Star was shining the brightest, and a few other stars were begining to become visible.
