There was an icey chill to the wind that constantly nipped at my coat, bullying me to get me to turn back. I wasn't going to turn back though, I had too much riding on today. I pushed open the double doors to Dreamweaver's stallion barn, several sets of whinnies flooding into my ears as my blue eyes adjusted to the darkness of the barn. I brushed my blonde hair back, pulling my coat around me further as I strode quickly into the barn and down the barn aisle. It was just four in the morning but I had to do this at this time, I couldn't let anyone see just incase it didn't turn out like I hoped.

I stopped at the stall I wanted and ran my hand over the cold metal bolt as I pulled it out of its resting place. My hand wrapped around the wooden stall door as I opened it, swinging it as far as it would go. I grabbed the black leather snaffle bridle from the hook on the right and slung it over my shoulder before entering the shavings covered stall. The stall was extremely larged compared to others and as luxurious as what you'd expect to see in the Royal barns of the Kings and Queens. A tall sixteen hand chestnut stallion stood inside the stall, a huge thick white blaze running perfectly in a stripe down his forehead and over his entire muzzle and four white stockings running all the way up his legs. He was definately flashy that was for sure. I smiled as I strode over to the four year old thoroughbred, his big noble head turning to me as he backed his ears and let out a few short whickers.

"Hello Merc. You ready boy?"

The royal red headcollar matched his firey coat beautifully, covering his head as soft as silk. A snort left his nostrils as he flicked his left ear back and his right ear forward before walking towards me with a bright look in those brown eyes of his. He had calmed down considerably since his last go on the track as a two year old. I had breezed him twice everyday apart from sunday which had done a lot to bring his weight down to the perfect level as well as his very slow metabolism. I smile crossed my lips as I ran a hand down his thick blaze, the gorgeous War Child son whuffing as he checked out the bridle. I laughed softly as I shook my head before slipping his headcollar off and putting the bridle on. Mercury accepted the bit easily, ears pricked as he looked at me expectantly.

"Okay handsome lets see what you can do."

I grinned as I grabbed the reins and led the studly four year old down the aisle and out into the yard. Mercury looked around with ears pricked, an excited expression oozing from his bright brown eyes as he pranced beside me effortlessly. His tail flagged out behind his copper hide as he lifted his head a degree higher and let out a joyous whinny. I laughed giving a firm tug on the reins as I led him over to the crossties. I snapped him in and patted his neck, a smile crossing my lips as he turned his neck and looked at me.

"Easy stud muffin, we still have to get the saddle."

I really couldn't wait for Mercury to sire his first foals, they were going to be something special if they were anything like him. Grinning from ear to ear I fetched his deep red saddle blanket with golden trimming and his light black leather racing saddle before jogging back over to the first ever War Child foal my mother had bred, raised and kept. The only other War Child foals I knew of was Mercury's half brother Dark War Child and his half sister Twilight Child which Dreamweaver also owned. As far as I knew LSS owned Dark War Child but then again I could be wrong. I slipped the saddle blanket and saddle onto the chestnut's back with a smile before kneeling down and grabbing the girth. I slipped it through the buckle before tightening it up. I then lifted the saddle pad and shortened the stirrups up before untieing Mercury and grabbing his reins.

Ready to go I gathered the reins up and slipped my foot into the stirrup before pushing off with my free foot and sliding into the saddle. I shortened the reins even more but not enough to be inhumane before turning and jogging Mercury out of Dreamweaver and over to Laguna Island's very own practice racetrack. By the time Merc stepped onto the track it was 4:23am and the sun was just starting to wake up. We had little time left before this place was packed out, after all it was a Saturday. I halted Mercury down at the starting line, pulling out the stop clock from my coat pocket. I tossed it over to a track hand I had hired for the evening and gave a small nod his way before gathering the reins and getting into jockey position.

"Okay Merc, this is it. Show me just what you can do. Don't hold back."

I whispered into his ear softly, feeling the chestnut beneath me ready to go. He understood what I wanted and with that the bell rang. The second the bell came to life Mercury was gone. His hooves slammed against the earth with phenominal power as he chucked huge clumps of dry earth up in his wake. His flamelicked mane danced on the breeze, ears pricked forward as he flew round the first turn. His hooves pounded with the rhythm of my heart, our souls flying as one as he tore round the second turn. I could hear him breath, his nostrils flaring as he picked up even more speed as he saw the final turn in his sights. Grinning from ear to ear I held him back, waiting for the homestretch to come to let him go. He was begging me to let him out, ears pricked as he gave a small leap which was barely noticeable to the untrained eye. I held back a laugh as the wind hit my face like a cannonball causing my eyes to water as I kept him going. He was going so fast I could barely believe it, grinning from ear to ear as I remembered his sire War Child's fantastic run in the Twilight Stakes. He had come second in his only run but still he was an amazing racer. I imagined I was in the Twilight Stakes with Mercury as we rounded the final turn for home, horses packed either side of us as I saw the finish line ahead.

"Mercury, lets go!"

I whisper in his ear, a huge grin on my lips as I give him his head and gave one light kick. He needed no encouragement as he took on a whole other gear leaving the high class racers in his dust as against all odds he tore across the finish line with an eight length lead. I whooped with joy, punching the air ecstatically as I slowed Mercury to a canter and then a trot. I halted Mercury by the stunned trackhand, wondering what his time was.

"So?"

Then it came, one of the most shocking things I had ever heard.

"He just broke the world record for the fastest racehorse."
